Old West Austin & Clarksville

Old West Austin is a unique and 
diverse neighborhood, which 
encompasses Clarksville, a National 
Register Historic District. It’s 
boundaries are Enfield Road to the 
north, Mopac Expressway to the 
west, Town Lake to the south and 
Lamar Boulevard to the east. Rolling 
hills, shady trees, and colorful 
homes give this neighborhood its 
character. The proximity to down-
town makes Old West Austin a 
desirable location with neighbor-
hood parks and excellent schools.


Clarksville is composed of a mixture of eclectic houses dating back to the late 1800s. The land on which the neighborhood was settled was once owned by Governor Elisha M. Pease. Rumor has it that Pease gave this land to his emancipated slaves with the arrogant expectation that if they lived close to his mansion they would remain in his service.


Clarksville was founded in 1871 as a freedman´s community, by Charles Clark, a former slave. The Sweet Home Baptist Church, now a restored historic landmark, served as the community meeting center. Elias Mayes, a black state legislator who worked to protect the rights given to African-Americans after the war, built his home on land purchased from Charles Clark in 1884. Many Clarksville residents farmed or worked in the cotton industry, while others held jobs in surrounding communities. Austin Landmarks.


In 1976, the Austin City Council approved the use a federal housing and community-development grant to finally pave streets permanently, improve drainage, and rehabilitate housing in Clarksville.

Drive to a Vacation Spot from Austin

N. Padre Island Seashore

Don't you love it! The ocean and the sky make a magnificent photo but even better is being there. Last week we took a short vacation to the beach. This is the N. Padre Island seashore. Just a 3.5 -4 hour drive from Austin and worth every minute. We spent our days walking along the beach and sitting in the shade watching the waves. It was wonderfully relaxing and we were only 20 minutes from my hometown - Corpus Christi.

Austin Market Statistics from September

From SEPTEMBER 2009 to SEPTEMBER 2010

Homes Sold: 1,274 - DOWN 27%

Median Sales Price: $195,000 - UP 4%

Days on Market: 82 - UP 15%

Active Listings: 10,453 - UP 14%

The problem as I see it is that buyers expect prices to be lower or continue to go down, however as the statistics show, prices in the Austin area are actually going up and most sellers believe in the price of their home. It appears to be a grid lock where buyers aren't buying and sellers aren't selling. As more properties continue to come on the market, active listings go up and so do days on market. What will it take to unstuck this situation? Trust me buyers, sellers are still willing to negotiate. And the truth to sellers is that as more properties come on the market it will be tougher to sell unless prices do come down.

WW II French Hero

When we visited France a couple of years ago we had the privilege of meeting André. He was a friend of some friends; a true gentleman and World War II hero. At the age of 15 he road his bicycle as a messenger between the French Underground cell his father headed and other underground cells whose purpose was to protect those for whom the Nazi soldiers were looking; including American soldiers and the American pilot whose plane was brought down when it crashed into my husbands uncles plane. The uncle died but the other pilot was protected by the underground until he could be rescued.

On November 11, André was named Knight of the Legion of Honour. Congratulations André!

Above are photos from the celebration and André receiving recognition and giving a speech. Now in his 80's, he lives a quiet life but is well loved and appreciated. We are hoping to be able to go back to France for another visit and I'm working on Learning French so I can better communicate.

Austin homes for Sale - Congratulations to Marlene and Ken

Marlene and Ken relocated to lovely Austin, Texas in preparation to retiring close to family. We actually went through 3 contract offers before finally closing on a beautiful home. It was a challenge because a when we made the first offer, the other agent stalled for days until a better offer came in. On our second offer, the sellers father became ill and she decided to take the house off the market. But the third time is the charm so we closed the third offer and Ken and Marlene are happily moving into their new home.
